Evaluation of Print Products
I feel that when creating my print products, I understood how Photoshop quite easily. This is because we are already familiar with a video editing package and I feel that editing has a lot of common, whether you are working with video, print or sound. For example, we already understood the idea of working in layers and building up layers to create a composite image. Most of the Photoshop tools are also familar from other packages that are more widely available. I managed to produce two products that both look like what they were supposed to; a poster and magazine cover, so this was a successful task overall. However, there has still been a lot to learn.
For my poster, I feel I picked an effective image as it’s a still from the film which manages to get across part of the story due to the mise-en-scène such as the beer cans and character’s messy clothing. I also feel the images I chose for my magazine cover were fitting as the main image looks like a typical magazine cover image for a rom-com film. The other images at the bottom all include actors that are suitable for my magazine targeted specifically at females. The colours and font used in on the magazine cover are also typically ‘girly’ and feminine which was what I was going for in this task.

A convention of a real poster that I have included successfully is the use of a main image that presents a main character from the film. It includes credits which is also a layout convention for a poster. For my magazine cover I have also included a main image of the two main characters in the film which is, again, typically seen on a film magazine cover as the stars are one of the main advertising features. The image is also in the centre at the bottom, another convention of magazine covers. The fact the magazine title is at the top, with the main image slightly overlapping, is also a sign of the conventions a real cover being used. Another convention I have successfully used is the existence of teaser texts and images, particularly those advertising other films.
The main thing wrong with my poster is that when printed half of it was cut off. This shows I didn’t plan out the composition correctly when creating it. My poster has very little written information on it so it may not be very apparent to the audience what the film is about. It’s also missing certain codes and conventions of a real poster such as a tagline, release date etc. This was due to the time restrictions we had to produce this piece. I’ve also extracted too much of the image when using the magic wand tool and the background is a bit bare and plain. As for my magazine cover I feel that, although females are the targeted audience, it is overly pink and girly and almost ‘sickly’ looking. I think it will therefore only target a very specific type of female audience. There is also a minimum amount of information on the poster so the background is quite bare and it therefore breaks the codes and conventions of a real magazine cover. The teaser text is also too small, meaning it wouldn’t be seen straight away and therefore unable to draw in attention. Again, I had limited time to work on this and don’t see either task as a finished product.
When starting my real print products I will bear a few things in mind. When producing my poster I will firstly make sure the layout is correct so when printed, nothing is cut off like my practise poster. I will also plan ahead what image I am going to use so I can use a background to go with it. I will try to include all the codes and conventions of a real poster such as taglines, production logos and release dates that I did not manage to include in my practise one. Furthermore I will plan to include a main image that is exciting and captivating to the audience. I will also be able to spend more time on the smaller things like cutting out the image properly so that it looks as professional as possible.
I will bear in mind when making my magazine cover that I am trying to target a wide audience not a very specific one. Therefore I shouldn’t use very gender specific colours and fonts. I will, again, need to plan ahead what image and background I am using so that I don’t have to choose from the small range of background textures on Photoshop as I did on my practise cover, as it may not go with the image I choose. I should also make sure the image is appropriate to the type of audience I am targeting and exciting enough to capture their attention. I should bear in mind that to look like a ‘real’ magazine cover it should include lots of information and exciting teaser text in different fonts.
