The cover of the Empire magazine consists of many elements. The main picture is of Batman and this is obvious as he is a well-known character and it says at the bottom left corner of the magazine “The Dark Knight Rises”. This cover relies a lot on previous film experiences from the audience. The main image is of Batman holding a light towards you and this makes it seem as though he is pointing at the reader. Also, he is wearing a mask, however his chin is showing. This tells us that although he is a superhero, he is still a real man.
The masthead of the magazine is in bold red letters which connotes danger. This tells us that the movie being talked about contains danger which links with action and violence. Above the “M” the date the magazine was published and the price of the mag is shown. This is a good place to put it as there is just enough space and if it was put somewhere else, it would look out of place as the cover is compact with lots of information.
The text to the right of the picture talks about what else is in the magazine and tells you what is new and what to look out for. The dark background gives a sense of mystery and makes the white Batman logo in the top left hand corner stand out. Total Film “Batman”
The cover of the Total Film magazine is also based around the new Batman film. The main image on the cover is of Batman but it is a whole body shot. The shot is a mind shot and is taken specifically for the mag cover. The actor in the Batman outfit is looking directly at the camera and is posing in a classic superhero posture. Again, there is huge reliance on previous audience knowledge and the expectations they bring to this film.
The masthead is in a gold font which matches the colour of Batman’s belt and the font used to put the title of the film “The Dark Knight Rises”. There is not much white space on this cover as it is compacted with information about the film, and pictures relating to the film. The logo of the film is also in gold in the top right hand corner which also links with the colour of his belt.
The barcode is on the bottom right hand corner and has been placed vertically so that it will fit next to the main image. This is done so that it does not look out of place and fits in with the magazine cover.
Empire “The Avengers”
The cover of the Empire magazine is based on the release of the Avengers. The main image on the cover is of “Thor”, one of the main characters in the film. This shot looks as though it is from the film as he is not posing specifically for a still camera but as though he is being filmed acting.
The mast head is hidden behind the head of “Thor” and is in the same colour as the title of the film which is just below half way down in the centre. This makes the title stand out and as it is white and all the other colours are fairly dark, it also makes it stand out. There are smaller images at the bottom with film titles superimposed. This is quite a simple cover. The attraction is in the images, and there is less to read than for many Empire covers.
