To continue my research into trailers, I took screenshots of two trailers and analysed the impact of the shots beneath. This has made me aware of how much each shot needs to convey. With such a limited time available, each shot has to really count.
50/50
Presenting my research in this format has made me realise how effective the intertitles are visually - they really stand out. I am surprised they don't replicate the brown colour scheme of the poster. You also notice how many of these shots are two shots or are all about facial expressions - you don't have to see the trailer to work out that this is a film about relationships and emotions. It will be useful for us to imagine our own trailer presented like this and see if it still carries the right genre tone and is easy to understand the narrative.
The Hunger Games
Presenting the trailer in this way makes me aware how dark this film is visually and how much of it takes place in one location. We have previously assumed that we will need to film in a variety of locations to ensure the feeling of taking shots from across a film. Of course, this film is mostly set in the Games arena so it makes sense that the shots are set there as it is where most of the dramatic action happens. I can see a similarity with 50 / 50 in that titles and credits are brought in towards the end to add pace. I am also noticing the facebook reference which we should add into our own end credits as social networking sites are such vital elements of promotional campaigns.
