Initial Research Into How Trailers Work - Oliver

Jeepers Creepers

Trailer form:
“Following has been approved for all audiences” – Green screen – institutional requirement
Flashes of production companies – again institutional credibility
Title slides “They were alone” “This fall” – non-diegetic narration
Fading between different slides – indicates different parts of narrative / non-chronological order
Voice over “Jeepers Creepers” – non-diegetic narrative, adding structure
“Coming Soon” – indicates advert for another product ie film
Genre:
Two young people – young people as stock characters (vulnerable but can act)
“They were alone” - isolation
Tell a myth- “Never found her death” – adds sense of verisimilitude
Blood background in the titles - iconography
Dead bodies wrapped up being thrown down the hole
Girl screaming - sound
Man with axe – iconic image / classic horror silhouette e.g. Psycho
Narrative:
Hermeneutic code – obstacles and delays for hero / victim
They see man throwing bodies down the hole - disruption
Woman says “It has to eat”
Enigma – how will they get away from the man?

Step Brothers
Trailer
drawing over the top of the character’s names
title credits
“This summer”
cuts between various scenes/shots
music playing in the background
release date shown “July 15th
Genre
jolly soundtrack
actor cast
comical scenes (bunk bed scene)
light blue title slides rather than scary colour in jeepers creepers (more boy-ish film)
Narrative
Enigma – boys have to share room – hate each other but then become friends
Hermeneutic – they have to get a job but are rude to the employer and get bullied by the children in the park

Love Actually
Trailer
Voiceover
“This holiday season”
Showed previous films from the same director
clips taken from throughout the film
soundtrack in the background
title credits
Genre
“Ultimate romantic comedy”
voiceover – director has caught the humiliation of love
typical rom-com feel – middle to upper class characters so focus on relationships not life problems
clips of different people in relationship but facing the same problems (people kissing)
funny clips – Hugh Grant talking to the picture – adds the ‘com’
film title “Love Actually”
Narrative
Enigma – relationships have issues such as the prime minister and his maid, and the woman whose husband is cheating – how will happy ending be reached?
Semic Code – they take on the relationship issues to symbolise our society’s obsession with family unit / romantic love

This initial research into trailers in different genres as shown me some key aspects to look for:

- trailers have to quickly establish form, genre and narrative
- they use some classic devices to do this (e.g. some of the narrative codes identfied)
- they also have their own structure and devices e.g. voiceover and intertitles
- sound is really important, at least as important as visuals
